European Storm-petrel European Storm-petrel
Hydrobates pelagicus
Length 14-18cm

Smallest British seabird. Sooty brown plumage looks completely dark except at very close range. White rump distinctive and gives passing resemblance to house martin. Storm-petrel's dangling legs, webbed feet and masterful use of even gale force winds soon dispel any confusion. Patters feet on water when feeding but otherwise employs strong, direct flight. Occurs in British waters from May to September. During daytime, always far out to sea and seen only from ferries or on pelagic birdwatching trips. Visits breeding colonies on islands off W and N British and Irish coasts only after dark when strange, purring calls heard.
