Carrion Crow
Corvus corone corone
Length 47cm
Recognised by all-black, glossy plumage and stout bill; far less gregarious than superficially similar rook and lacking that species' pale, bare face. Widespread and often common in most of England, Wales and E Scotland; range overlaps only slightly with closely related subspecies, hooded crow. Found on farmland, moorland and on coasts. Utters harsh, croaking call. An opportunistic feeder, taking carrion, insects, young birds and eggs. Untidy twig nest built in tree.
