Canada Goose
Branta canadensis
Length 95-105cm
Large, unmistakable goose with upright stance and long neck giving it a swan-like silhouette. As name suggests, true range is N America but introduced and now thoroughly established as common, resident breeding bird. Has white cheeks on otherwise black head and neck. Body mainly grey-brown except for white under stern; juvenile similar but markings less distinct. Nests beside wetlands and sometimes in nearby arable fields. Outside breeding season, seen in sizeable flocks on lakes and reservoirs; visits urban lakes and grazes parkland grass but seldom seen on coast. In flight, utters loud, disyllabic trumpeting calls.
