Buzzard Buzzard
Buteo buteo
Wingspan 115-125cm

The commonest large raptor seen in W and N England, Wales and Scotland. Formerly much persecuted despite fact that diet comprises mainly earthworms and carrion in many areas. Draws attention to itself in flight with mewing calls. Rides thermals with ease on broad, rounded wings, held in 'v' shape when soaring. Perches for long periods on posts and dead branches. Plumage colour extremely variable but usually some shade of brown; wings barred and tail uniformly banded. Prefers farmland for feeding with nearby woods for nesting.
