Familiar garden bird in much of Britain and Ireland but also found in woodland, farmland and on moors. Mostly resident but N European birds add to numbers in winter. Male (A) easily identified by thrush-like appearance and all-black plumage; yellow eyering and bill usually conspicuous. Female (B) and juvenile have brown plumages. Harsh
tchak alarm calls often heard at dusk or if prowling cat located. Male is excellent songster. Feeds on worms, insects, fruit and berries.
