Striking red tail in all plumages. Very scarce breeder when male's plumage mainly black and slate-grey. More often seen as passage migrant or winter visitor when male and female both grey-brown. Breeding records mainly from urban locations in S England. In winter, found on coasts of S and W England and Ireland.
