Black Guillemot
Cepphus grylle
Length 34cm
Distinctive at all times of year. In summer, has mainly sooty black plumage except for striking white patch on wing, conspicuous both at rest and in flight. In winter, upperparts look scaly grey and underparts white; white wing patch still visible but black element of plumage restricted to wingtips and tail. At close range, red legs and orange-red gape can be seen. Usually seen singly or in small groups, often quite close to shore off rocky coasts and jetties. Rather local and scarce, and easy to see only in N Scotland and around Scottish isles. Also occurs on W coast of Britain S to Anglesey and around much of Irish coast. Dives well in search of bottom-dwelling fish such as butterfish. Breeds in fairly small and loose colonies on rocky coasts. Utters high-pitched call.
