Length 40-55cm

Rather local and declining species. Associated with moorland habitats but specifically favours areas where woodland (often conifer plantations) adjacent to open land. Male (A) larger than female (B) and looks all-black at distance; close range reveals red wattle above eye and remarkable white-centred, lyre-shaped tail seen on birds at communal, traditional leks. Displaying birds best found in early morning. Female has orange-brown plumage; in flight shows forked tail and faint wingbar. Restricted to Wales, C and N England and Scotland.
