Length 28-24cm

Distinguished in all plumages from slavonian grebe by uptilted bill and steep forehead. In breeding season has black head, neck and back with striking yellow ear tufts. In winter, looks rather black and white with dark cap, cheeks, nape and back, and pale underparts. Rare and erratic breeder in Scotland and N Ireland. In winter, species is widespread in sheltered, coastal waters.
