Genre of short
pastoral poetry or prose, often an artistic or picturesque narrative or description of rustic life. The term idyllic refers to the supposed perfection of the countryside, often in sharp contrast to the lives of the writer and the reader.
In the 16th and 17th centuries pastoral poetry, praising a shepherd's life, was written for a sophisticated court audience and often ignored the true realities of country life.
