Spraycan Art

Creative development of graffiti (drawings on public surfaces). Spraycan art developed in the subways of New York, USA, in the 1970s and 1980s. Large murals are ‘painted’ reflecting inner-city life, often in the style of a comic strip. In the USA, spraycan-art memorials are commonly created in remembrance of those who have died in inner-city violence.

Spraycan art and other urban graffiti, along with surrealism and art brut, inspired the creation of graffiti art during the 1970s, although this movement was absorbed into the commercial art world during the 1980s.
