Configuration (art)

In art, the arrangement of individual elements and shapes within the content of an artwork, and the overall meaning when these elements are brought together in their relative context. A flower in one painting may have the relative meaning of symbolizing love and fertility, whereas in another painting, it may simply be a background detail. The configuration of a painting may be likened to the words of a sentence; the words convey little individually, but convey greater meaning, or different things, when forming part of a sentence.
