Informal and often ungrammatical style that has developed as a result of the increased use of
e-mail as a swift means of
communication. Sometimes, even capital letters are abandoned, and apostrophes omitted, to increase typing speed. The common opening for an e-mail is Hi or Hello, since the emphasis is on speaking to the recipient. The most common closing form is Regards.
Mobile phone messaging (
SMS; short message service) is virtually a shorthand.
