Hakkinen, Mika Pauli

Finnish racing driver who won the 1998 and 1999 Formula 1 World Drivers' Championships. He made his Formula 1 debut in 1991 (for the Lotus-Judd team), a year after winning the British Formula 3 title. Switching to the McLaren team in 1993, he finished fourth in the championship in 1993 and 1994, and fifth in 1996, but it was not until the final race of the 1997 season that he won his first Formula 1 Grand Prix. In 1998, however, he won the drivers' crown and helped McLaren-Mercedes to the constructors' title.
