Manchester Terrier

Breed of smooth-haired black-and-tan terrier. Manchester terriers have a long, wedge-shaped head, small dark eyes, and V-shaped ears, hanging close to the head. The usual weight is 8 kg/17.5 lb and the height 38–41 cm/15–16 in.

The breed has a long neck tapering from the sloping shoulders to the head, and a narrow and deep chest. The legs are quite straight and the tail is thick where it joins the body, tapering to a point. The glossy coat should be jet black and rich mahogany tan on the head; the muzzle should be tanned to the nose, which, with the nasal bone, is jet black; the forelegs should be half tanned and the hind legs tanned on the inside, but not on the outside.

The earliest recognizable Manchester terrier is portrayed in an illuminated manuscript book of hours of the 15th century. It is generally accepted that the pure breed had its origin in and around Manchester, England.
