English painter, sculptor, and printmaker. He was a leading figure in the
pop art movement of the 1960s. His colourful paintings are executed in the style of commercial advertising, and unabashedly celebrate the female form, for example,
Perfect Match (196667; Wallraf-Richartz Museum, Cologne). One of the most committed exponents of pop art, he continued to work in this vein into the 1990s.
His witty, abbreviated imagery of women clad in bustiers, garter-belts, stocking tops, and stiletto-heeled shoes is intended as a comment on male fantasies and sexual fetishes.
