International style of dance music of the 1970s with a heavily emphasized beat, descended from
funk. It was designed to be played in discotheques rather than performed live; hence the production was often more important than the performer, and drum machines came to dominate.
Self-produced US disco group KC and the Sunshine Band (formed 1973) had five number-one hits, including Shake Your Booty (1976). German producer Giorgio Moroder (1941 ) created numerous disco hits, many of them with US singer Donna Summer (1948 ), including Love to Love You, Baby (1975) and I Feel Love (1977). US producer Nile Rodgers (1952 ) was a member of disco group Chic (197783), whose hits include Everybody Dance (1978) and Good Times (1979). Disco music was featured in the 1977 film
Saturday Night Fever.
