For example, data from a traffic survey could be presented in a pie chart in the following way:
(1) convert each item of data to a percentage figure;
(2) 100% will equal 360 degrees of the circle, therefore each 1% = 360/100 = 3.6 degrees;
(3) calculate the angle of the segment for each item of data by multiplying the percentage by 3.6, and plot this on the circle.
The diagram may be made clearer by adding colours or shadings to each group, together with a key.
