Farming system that specializes in the commercial growing of vegetables, fruit, or flowers. It is an intensive agriculture with crops often being grown inside greenhouses on small farms.
Market gardens may be located within easy access of markets, on the fringes of urban areas; for example, in the Home Counties for the London market. Such areas as the Channel Islands, where early crops can be grown outside because of a mild climate, are especially suitable.
