Young Offender Institution


In the UK, place of detention for lawbreakers under 17 (juveniles) and 17–21 (young adults). The period of detention depends on the seriousness of the offence and on the age and sex of the offender. The institution was introduced by the Criminal Justice Act of 1988.

A number of statutory (legal) requirements support the principle that a custodial sentence in a young offender institution should be used only as a last resort.
