A mother always has parental responsibility. A father has responsibility if married to the mother at the time of the birth. If unmarried, the father can acquire parental responsibility by entering into a written agreement with the mother or through an order of court. Parental responsibility remains with the parents even if the child is subject to a court order; it is possible for a number of people to have parental responsibility for a child.
