Parental Responsibility
In law, the rights, powers, authority, and duties of parents in relation to a child and the child's property. Parental responsibility may be given to a person, or people, other than the parents: by the private appointment of a guardian or by order of court under the 1989 Children Act (see residence and contact).
A mother always has parental responsibility. A father has responsibility if married to the mother at the time of the birth. If unmarried, the father can acquire parental responsibility by entering into a written agreement with the mother or through an order of court. Parental responsibility remains with the parents even if the child is subject to a court order; it is possible for a number of people to have parental responsibility for a child.
