Nyman, Michael
English composer. His highly stylized music is characterized by processes of gradual modification by repetition of complex musical formulae (known as minimalism). His compositions include scores for the English film-maker Peter Greenaway and the New Zealand film-maker Jane Campion (The Piano, 1992); a chamber opera, The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat (1989); and three string quartets.
