In the wake of the release of the Guildford Four in October 1989 and calls for a review of the sentencing of the Birmingham Six, a report by former appeals judge John May persuaded home secretary David Waddington that there had been a miscarriage of justice in the Maguire case. In July 1990 he referred it back to the Court of Appeal for quashing.
