German leader of the Nazi Brownshirts, the SA (Sturmabteilung). On the pretext of an intended SA putsch (uprising) by the Brownshirts, the Nazis had some hundred of them, including Röhm, killed 2930 June 1934. The event is known as the Night of the Long Knives.
