Flaherty, Robert (Joseph)

US film director. He was one of the pioneers of documentary film-making. He exerted great influence through his pioneer documentary of Inuit life, Nanook of the North (1922), a critical and commercial success.

Later films include Moana (1926), a South Seas documentary; Man of Aran (1934), Elephant Boy (1936), The Land (1942), and the Standard Oil-sponsored Louisiana Story (1948). Critics subsequently raised questions about the truthfulness of his documentary method, which also employed dramatic techniques.
