Coil of wire wound around a soft iron core that acts as a magnet when an electric current flows through the wire. Electromagnets have many uses: in switches, electric bells,
solenoids, and metal-lifting cranes.
The strength of the electromagnet can be increased by increasing the current through the wire, changing the material of the core, or by increasing the number of turns in the wire coil. At the north pole of the electromagnet current flows anticlockwise; at the south pole flow is clockwise.
