Province of southeastern Belgium, part of the French-speaking community and Walloon region; area 4,400 sq km/1,698 sq mi; population (1995 est) 240,300. The capital is Arlon and other towns and cities include Bastogne, St Hubert, and Bouillon. The province is situated in the southeastern Ardennes and is widely forested. To the south is the Belgian Lorraine, part of the Paris Basin. The rivers Ourthe, Semois, and Lesse run through the province. The province's unpredictable climate and thin soil limit its agricultural production. Cattle and pig raising predominates. Agricultural output includes dairy products and tobacco, and the major industries are iron and steel.
The area was formerly part of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, and became a Belgian province in 1831.
