Paolozzi, Eduardo Luigi

Scottish sculptor and graphic artist. He was an important figure in the pop art movement in London in the 1950s and 1960s. In his early sculptures he typically assembled bronze casts of machinery to create sinister, robot-like figures; Cyclops (1957; Tate Gallery, London) and Jason (1956; Museum of Modern Art, New York) are examples. From the 1960s his work became more abstract and lighter in mood.

The mural decorations for Tottenham Court Road tube station, London (installed 1983–85), and a huge bronze The Wealth of Nations (1993; Royal Bank of Scotland, Edinburgh) are among his many public commissions. He was knighted in 1989.
