Reduction of political tension and the easing of strained relations between nations, as seen in the ending of the
Cold War 198990. The term was first used in the 1970s to describe the new easing of relations between the world's two major superpowers, the USA and the USSR. This resulted in increased contact between East and West in the form of trade agreements and cultural exchanges, and even saw restored relation between the USA and communist China.
