Malé


Capital and chief atoll of the Maldives in the Indian Ocean; population (2000 est) 74,100. It lies 700 km/435 mi southwest of Sri Lanka and has an international airport which has helped the development of the tourist industry in recent decades. It trades in coconuts, copra, breadfruit, fish (especially tuna and bonito), and palm products. It is linked to Sri Lanka and India by regular steamship services.
