The main Egyptian nationalist party between World Wars I and II. Under Nahas Pasha it formed a number of governments in the 1920s and 1930s. Dismissed by King Farouk in 1938, it was reinstated by the British in 1941. The party's pro-British stance weakened its claim to lead the nationalist movement, and the party was again dismissed by Farouk in 1952, shortly before his own deposition. Wafd was banned in January 1953.
