In England, Wales, and Northern Ireland, examinations taken by students usually at the age of 18, after two years' study, in no more than four subjects at one time. Two A-level passes are normally required for entry to a university degree course. Scottish students sit Highers.
The emblem was added to distinguish the flag from that of Italy. The design is based on the French tricolour. The colours are those of the Mexican liberation army. Effective date: 23 November 1968.
