Walsall
Industrial town in West Midlands, central England, 13 km/8 mi northwest of Birmingham; population (2001) 171,000. It has a leather industry and also produces castings. Until the 1930s coal was mined here. Walsall's art gallery contains the Garman–Ryan collection, over 350 paintings including works by Jacob Epstein. The writer Jerome K Jerome was born here in 1859.
