Part of the Arctic Ocean off the north coast of the Russian Federation, bounded to the northwest by the island of Novaya Zemlya and to the northeast by Severnaya Zemlya; area 880,000 sq km/339,768 sq mi; average depths 30100 m/98328 ft, with a maximum of 620 m/2,034 ft. Novy Port on the Gulf of Ob is the chief port. Dikson is also a main port and is located on the mouth of the Yenisey River, which flows into the Kara Sea.
