In World War II, the beachhead invasion of Italy 22 Jan23 May 1944 by Allied troops; failure to use information gained by deciphering German codes (see
Ultra) led to Allied troops being stranded temporarily after German attacks.
Allied troops were held on the beachhead for five months before the breakthrough after Monte Cassino allowed the US 5th Army to dislodge the Germans from the Alban Hills and allow the Anzio force to begin its advance on Rome.
