Any of a group of leguminous plants (see
legume) that comprises about 300 species. Lupins are native to Mediterranean regions and parts of North and South America, and some species are naturalized in Britain. Their spikes of pealike flowers may be white, yellow, blue, or pink.
L. albus is cultivated in some places for cattle fodder and for green manuring; other varieties are cultivated in Europe as cottage garden plants. (Genus
