US dramatist. Associated with the Theatre of the
Absurd, he is best known for his play
Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (1962, filmed 1966), a grim depiction of a miserable marriage. His other internationally-performed plays include
The Zoo Story (1960),
The American Dream (1961), and
Tiny Alice (1965).
A Delicate Balance (1966) and
Seascape (1975) both won Pulitzer Prizes, and
Three Tall Women (1994) marked his return to critical acclaim.
