Bangor (Wales)
Cathedral, university, and market town in Gwynedd, north Wales, on the Menai Strait 15 km/9 mi northeast of Caernarfon; population (2001) 15,300. Industries include chemicals, electrical goods, and engineering. Trade in slate from Penrhyn quarries was at one time very important, but has declined in recent decades. Bangor is set in a region of outstanding natural beauty, with Snowdonia National Park and the Gwynedd coastline on its doorstep.
Approximately 55% of the population is Welsh-speaking. Bangor is linked to Anglesey by the Menai suspension bridge, designed by Thomas Telford. A 457 m/1500 ft long Victorian pier, built in 1896 and refurbished in the 1980s, extends into the Menai Strait from Bangor.
