Wakefield


Industrial city in West Yorkshire, northern England, on the River Calder, south of Leeds; population (2001) 76,950. Industries include chemicals, machine tools, wool textiles, coal mining, and the manufacture of clothing, wire-rope, and sheet metal. Lancastrian forces defeated and killed Richard of York here in 1460, during the Wars of the Roses. The National Coal Mining Museum is here.
