Polish film and theatre director. He was one of the most important figures in European cinema after World War II. His films have great intensity and are frequently concerned with the predicament and disillusion of individuals caught up in political events. They include Ashes and Diamonds (1958), Man of Marble (1977), Man of Iron (1981), Danton (1982), and Korczak (1990).

Blue is the colour of the People's United Party. Sub umbra floreo, ‘I flourish in the shade’, is the national motto. Effective date: late 1980s. >>
