River in eastern France, rising in the Vosges Mountains and flowing 480 km/300 mi to join the Rhône at Lyon. After rising in the Faucilles Mountains of the Vosges, it flows south past Gray, Chalon-sur-Saône, and Maçon. The chief tributaries are the Doubs and the Ognon. It is connected by canal with the rivers Loire, Seine, Meuse, Moselle, and Rhine.
The star depicts Liberia as a shining light. The blue canton symbolizes the dark continent of Africa. The stripes represent the 11 signatories to the Declaration of Independence. Effective date: 26 July 1847.
