River port and capital of Santa Fé province, northeast Argentina, on the Salado River 153 km/95 mi north of Rosario; population (2001) 368,700. It is a leading distribution centre for the area and an export outlet for its agro-industrial and processed products. There are shipyards, timber, cattle, and wool are exported. It has a 17th-century cathedral, several churches such as the mid-17th century Templo de Santo Domingo, and the Litoral University (founded 1919). Santa Fé was founded in 1573, and the 1853 constitution was drafted here.
