Old San'a dates from the 14th and 15th centuries. It grew rich because of its position on one of the Arabian spice trade routes. UNESCO launched a campaign to restore and safeguard the old city in 1984.
Red symbolizes blood. Yellow represents sunshine. Green stands for the islands' riches. Black reflects the Melanesian population. Effective date: 30 July 1980.
