Settled in 1696 by Quakers, and called Stony Brook, it was renamed Princes Town in 1724 to honour William III of OrangeNassau.
During the American Revolution, the British were defeated here by George Washington in 1777; the site is now commemorated by the Princeton Battlefield State Park, one of 17 entries on the national register of historic places. Another is the home of Grover Cleveland, US president 188589 and 189397, as well as university buildings. Princeton was briefly the capital of the USA, from June to November 1783.
Blue is said to represent the bright sky. The star stands for freedom. Effective date: 12 October 1954.
