Industrial town, port, and, since 1997, administrative headquarters of Poole unitary authority in southern England, 8 km/5 mi west of Bournemouth; area 64 sq km/25 sq mi; population (2001) 144,800. It was part of the county of Dorset until 1997. Poole Harbour is a centre for yachting. In addition to tourism, the town's industries include engineering, boatbuilding, and the manufacture of caravans, sail cloth, packaging materials, tiles, and pottery from local clay.
Furzey Island, within the harbour, is part of Wytch Farm, Britain's largest onshore oil development.
