US general in World War II, known as Old Blood and Guts. During World War I, he formed the first US tank force and led it in action in 1918. He was appointed to command the 2nd Armored Division in 1940 and became commanding general of the 1st Armored Corps in 1941. In 1942 he led the Western Task Force that landed at Casablanca, Morocco. After commanding the 7th Army in the invasion of Sicily, he led the 3rd Army across France and into Germany, reaching the Czech frontier.
