Funchal
Capital and chief port of the Portuguese island of Madeira, on the south coast; population (1991) 109,900. Tourism and Madeira wine are the main industries.
Founded 1421 by the Portuguese navigator João Gonçalves Zarco, it was under Spanish rule 1580–1640 and under Britain 1801 and 1807–14.
