Indian-born British physician and bacteriologist who was awarded a Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 1902 for his work on the role of the
Anopheles mosquito in transmitting malaria. From 1881 to 1899 he served in the Indian Medical Service, and during 189598 identified mosquitoes of the genus
Anopheles as being responsible for the spread of malaria. He was knighted in 1911.
