Religious and political movement in 16th-century Europe to reform the Roman Catholic Church, which led to the establishment of the Protestant churches. Anticipated by medieval movements such as the
Waldenses,
Lollards, and
Hussites, it was started by the German priest Martin
Luther in 1517, and became effective when local princes gave it support by challenging the political power of the papacy and confiscating church wealth.
