History
The area of modern Navarre is part of the former medieval kingdom of Navarre. Estella, to the southwest, where Don Carlos was proclaimed king in 1833, was a centre of agitation by the Carlists. During the Spanish Civil War (193639) most of Navarre fought with Franco's Nationalists against the Republicans; they fought in the bitter struggle for the Basque Country, which was almost entirely Republican.
The national colours are taken from the Rusyn arms of 1848. Effective date: 28 January 1992.
