Navarre

Autonomous community and province of northern Spain, bordered by France on the north; area 10,421 sq km/4,024 sq mi; population (1996 est) 520,600. The region is mountainous, containing spurs of the Pyrenees, and includes Monte Adi (1,503 m/4,933 ft high); the rivers Arga, Aragón, and Ebro flow through the area. Cereals and wine are produced in the lowlands. The capital is Pamplona.

History
The area of modern Navarre is part of the former medieval kingdom of Navarre. Estella, to the southwest, where Don Carlos was proclaimed king in 1833, was a centre of agitation by the Carlists. During the Spanish Civil War (1936–39) most of Navarre fought with Franco's Nationalists against the Republicans; they fought in the bitter struggle for the Basque Country, which was almost entirely Republican.
